Mersea Island is an idyllic location found nine miles south east of Colchester and covering seven square miles, with a glowing reputation for beautiful scenery and historic charm.
Is Mersea Island worth a visit?
The area is obviously very tidal, but it is a beach that is ideal for beach-combing (a favourite for my partner). Its a stoney beach for sure & when the tide is out…ITS OUT! Obviously in winter you see a beach in its least inviting time.

What is Mersea known for?
Mersea is not known for its golden sands but Monkey Beach, just across the road from the cottage, is probably the island’s best. The children set about exploring the network of tiny creeks and boardwalks which criss-cross the marshes and collecting sun-bleached oyster shells to decorate their sandcastles.
Does Mersea Island get cut off?
All About The Island. Despite the ongoing march of development Mersea manages to retain some of its former island magic. At full moon and new moon the sea water slowly creeps over the mud onto the Strood causeway and Mersea becomes, for a while, truly an island, cut off from the mainland.

This south facing sand and shingle beach looks out over the Blackwater Estuary from Mersea Island. West Mersea is a fairly old fashioned type of resort beach, but in the good sense. Whilst you will find holiday parks and beach huts there is also an unspoiled, laid-back feeling about the place.

West Mersea is a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway. The beach is sandy with pebbles and is backed by beach huts and grassland. The water is considered safe enough for swimming, however samples of the water have shown that there are spikes on some days in the amount of bacteria found.
When can you cross into Mersea?
If you absolutely must get across, and the predicted tide height is 4.9m or above, allow about 1 hour either side of the high tide time. Allow an extra 30 mins if it is over 5.5m. The biggest tides usually happen when high tide is due between about 12 and 3.30. Outside these times you will probably be fine to cross.
Is Mersea cut off at high tide?
It usually says avoid 30 min either side of high tide, but that is only when high tide is high enough to cover the road.
