Why are fetal pigs used for this lab?
A fetal pig dissection is helpful for anatomy studies because the size of the organs makes them easy to find and identify. It is also interesting to do because a lot of the internal anatomy is similar to humans!
When examining your fetal pig before dissection You note that the umbilical cord is on the?
In the fetal pig, the umbilical cord (Figure 2.3A-B) is attached to the ventral surface of the abdomen.
What is the specific purpose of injecting the fetal pig with these different Coloured compounds?
The pig may have been injected with colored latex which makes it easy to locate the veins (blue) and the arteries (red). Locate the anterior and posterior vena cava. These carry blood from the cranial and caudal portions of the body, respectively.
Do female pigs have a urogenital opening?
o Female: The urogenital opening in the female is immediately ventral to the anus and has a small genital papilla marking its location. o Male: The scrotal sac is ventral to the anus and a urogenital opening is just posterior to the umbilical cord. Place the fetal pig on a dissecting tray ventral (belly) side up.
How old are fetal pigs for dissection?
What is a Fetal Pig?
Length | Approximate Age |
---|---|
10-15mm | 20-30 Days |
15-20mm | 30-40 Days |
20-40mm | 40-55 Days |
50-75mm | 60-70 Days |
How are fetal pigs obtained for dissection?
Fetal pigs used in dissection are cut from the bodies of their mothers, who are killed in slaughterhouses so people can eat their flesh.
What is the gender of the pig that you dissected How do you know?
Determine the sex of your pig by looking for the urogenital opening. On females, this opening is located near the anus. On males, the opening is located near the umbilical cord.
What is the function of the urogenital papilla in a fetal pig?
If your pig is female, you will see the genital papillae under the tail. At the base of this structure is the urogenital opening that serves to release metabolic waste and is the opening to the reproductive system. You will learn more about these structures in the “Reproductive System” section of this guide.
What is the urogenital opening?
The urogenital opening is where bodily waste and reproductive fluids are expelled to the environment outside of the body cavity. In some organisms, including birds and many fish, discharge from the urological, digestive, and reproductive systems empty into a common sac called the cloaca.
