What is the maximum size of stack?
It depends on your operating system. On Windows, the typical maximum size for a stack is 1MB, whereas it is 8MB on a typical modern Linux, although those values are adjustable in various ways.
Why is stack size limited?
Because all threads in a process share the same address space, they have to divide it between them. And after the operating system has taken its part, there is “only” 2-3 GB left for an application. And that size is the limit for both the physical and the virtual memory, because there just aren’t any more addresses.
How big is the stack by default?
8 megabytes
Stacks are temporary memory address spaces used to hold arguments and automatic variables during invocation of a subprogram or function reference. In general, the default main stack size is 8 megabytes.
What is the stack size in Windows?
The reserve value specifies the total stack allocation in virtual memory. For ARM64, x86, and x64 machines, the default stack size is 1 MB. The commit value is subject to interpretation by the operating system. In WindowsRT, it specifies the amount of physical memory to allocate at a time.
How big should a stack be?
In Visual Studio the default stack size is 1 MB i think, so with a recursion depth of 10,000 each stack frame can be at most ~100 bytes which should be sufficient for a DFS algorithm. Most compilers including Visual Studio let you specify the stack size.
How large is the stack C#?
Today’s PCs have a large amount of physical RAM but still, the stack size of C# is only 1 MB for 32-bit processes and 4 MB for 64-bit processes (Stack capacity in C#).
Is stack memory limited?
Yes, stack is always limited.
How do I change the thread stack size in Windows?
To change the reserved stack size, set the dwCreationFlags parameter of CreateThread or CreateRemoteThread to STACK_SIZE_PARAM_IS_A_RESERVATION and use the dwStackSize parameter. In this case, the initially committed size is the default size specified in the executable header.
What is stack size?
The stack size is determined when the thread is created since it needs to occupy contiguous address space. That means that the entire address space for the thread’s stack has to be reserved at the point of creating the thread. If the stack is too small then it can overflow.
How do you determine stack size?
You should see garbage for the part of the stack that has been used and the “STACK—” strings in the remainder of the stack. Count the number of complete strings, multiply by 8 (since “STACK—” is 8 bytes long), and you have the number of bytes of remaining stack space.
Is the stack size fixed?
The maximum stack size is static because that is the definition of “maximum”. Any sort of maximum on anything is a fixed, agreed-upon limiting figure. If it behaves as a spontaneously moving target, it isn’t a maximum. Stacks on virtual-memory operating systems do in fact grow dynamically, up to the maximum.
How much stack memory is available?
Stack size is 8.192MB of memory.
How much stack space does a 32-bit thread use?
Because every 32-bit thread begins its life in 64-bit mode and the stack space it uses when starting exceeds a page, you’ll typically see at least 16KB of the 64-bit stack committed. Here’s an example of a 32-bit thread’s 64-bit and 32-bit stacks (the one labeled “Wow64” is the 32-bit stack):
What is the servicing stack in Windows?
The “servicing stack” is the code that installs other operating system updates. Additionally, it contains the “component-based servicing stack” (CBS), which is a key underlying component for several elements of Windows deployment, such as DISM, SFC, changing Windows features or roles, and repairing components.
What is the size of the 64 bit stack in Linux?
The 64-bit stack has a reserve of 256K (except that on systems prior to Vista, the initial thread’s 64-bit stack is 1MB). Because every 32-bit thread begins its life in 64-bit mode and the stack space it uses when starting exceeds a page, you’ll typically see at least 16KB of the 64-bit stack committed.
How to choose the right stack size for your application?
It is best to choose as small a stack size as possible and commit the stack that is needed for the thread or fiber to run reliably. Every page that is reserved for the stack cannot be used for any other purpose.
