Why do you think Homer would include this scene in a story of battle?
He zoomed in on characters when they were fighting. One of his first aristeia in the Iliad was focused on Diomedes. Homer would describe the whole battle scene with the Trojans verses the Greeks. It was a way to flashback and to explain why the Greeks and Trojans were at war.
